Edwards and Frederick Eden Bach. The two publishers later incorporated as the Evening Journal Publishing Company, with Bach as editor and Edwards as publisher. Housed in the Gawthorp Building at Fourth and Shipley Streets in Wilmington, the paper was Republican in nature while under Bach's leadership. Following his retirement, Edwards became editor and shifted Evening Journal to a Democratic perspective. When the newspaper came under the editorship of George B. Hynson following the sale of Edwards' interest, it reverted back to Republican control. Following Hynson's retirement, the newspaper was purchased by the Republican Printing and Publishing Company. From the late 1880s through late 1920s, Evening Journal competed with Every Evening, Wilmington Daily Commercial. In 1905, Evening Journal merged with Daily Republican, and from November 25, 1905 until May 24, 1906, the paper was sometimes published as Evening Journal and the Daily Republican. In January 1933, Evening Journal merged with Every Evening to form Evening Journal and Every Evening. In 1934, the title changed to Journal-Every Evening until 1960 when the title reverted back to Evening Journal. In 1966, Evening Journal merged with Morning News and was published on Saturday mornings. Holiday issues were published as News Journal and Sunday issues were published as Sunday News Journal from 1975 until 1989. Since that time, the modern News Journal has remained the primary newspaper for the state</p>
